The independent international testing organization TÜV Rheinland, which is based on very strict requirements, has certified JURA espresso machines as extremely hygienic. Limescale causes malfunctions and impairs the taste of coffee
When water is heated, scale builds up in the system. Scale makes the pipes narrower, the water heats up more slowly and the machine uses more energy. If a lot of scale builds up, the machine can even break down. Scale also negatively affects the taste of the coffee. A small amount of calcium carbonate is important for the taste of the coffee, but if there is too much of it, it gives the water an unpleasant aftertaste. The taste of the coffee also doesn’t taste as good as it could – partly due to fluctuations in water temperature.
